Everything You Need to Know About Lip Fillers

Whether you’re thinking of a pillowy, Instagram-worthy pucker or a natural-looking boost in lip volume, lip treatments have become one of the most sought-after aesthetic treatments. Patients of all ages and genders have started seeking out lip fillers as a relatively non-invasive treatment. Interested in learning more about lip fillers? Get an overview here!

Why Lip Fillers?

Most commonly, patients seeking out lip fillers are looking for a subtle change; as we age, and connective tissue changes, our lips naturally thin. Combined with small wrinkles forming along the lip line, this can result in lips becoming smaller and less defined, making it more difficult to do things like apply lipstick. A relatively small amount of lip filler can increase volume and moisture in the area around the lips.

Another common reason to request lip fillers is lip asymmetry. Whether lip asymmetry is genetic or due to an injury, having one lip that is larger than the other can make a person self conscious, and at times can even affect speech patterns.

Still, other patients may have a particular element of their smile they would like to address, like having a more defined cupid’s bow, or wanting more dramatic, full lips. In all cases, consultation with an aesthetic doctor can help you get results you are happy with.

Abington Aesthetic & Laser Medical center offers a variety of lip fillers for your specific wants and needs including Revanesse LIPS+, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC, and Restylane.

How Do Lip Fillers Work?

Most dermal fillers used in the lips use hyaluronic acid, which attracts moisture and as a result increases the volume of the skin where it is injected. Eventually, it will be metabolized into the skin and your lips will return to normal without new injections—lip fillers generally last around twelve months.

When you visit a doctor for lip fillers, you should tell them what you are hoping to achieve, and listen to their suggestions as well; your lip shape cannot be radically altered through fillers, so it’s as simple as just bringing in a picture. Your doctor will be able to give you an idea of what to expect and help you decide what the best option is for your face. In addition, they will be able to recommend specific products to use, as different lip fillers will work in slightly different ways.

What to Expect During and After the Procedure?

One of the best things about lip fillers is that the recovery process is generally quite easy. You should avoid anything that might thin your blood (like aspirin, alcohol, etc.) before the procedure, and you can expect some soreness and mild bruising for a few days. But the actual process is fairly stress free! You may see your lips starting to change as soon as six months after the procedure, and, depending on the lip filler that works best for you, your lips will likely be back to normal within 12–18 months(*).
