What to Avoid Following a Dermal Filler: A Guide to Post-Treatment Care

In an effort to ensure all of our patients feel confident in their decisions to schedule their aesthetic services with us, we strive to ensure that everyone is educated on what to expect pre- and post-treatment.

Due to their popularity — rated as the second most common nonsurgical aesthetic procedure  —  we thought it made sense to present a post-treatment care guide for dermal fillers.

We recommend reviewing this before your dermal filler treatment, so you’re prepared and positioned to make your post-treatment experience quick and easy.

The don’ts of dermal filler post-care

As someone who invests in their physical appearance, you want to ensure that you take careful precautions to preserve and protect your injectable dermal filler treatment. To that end, we caution you against the following…

Touching or massaging the treated area

It’s tempting, we know, but it’s crucial to resist touching or massaging so as not to disrupt the placement of the filler, which can cause uneven results.

Intense physical activity

Strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating should be avoided for the first 24 to 48 hours post-treatment. Increased blood flow and sweating may contribute to swelling and discomfort.

Sunbathing and/or tanning beds

UV rays can be harsh on your skin, especially after a filler treatment. Avoid sunbathing and tanning beds for at least one week following the procedure. If you must be outdoors, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin. (as you always should, anyway!)

Alcohol consumption

While enjoying a glass of wine or a cocktail may be a part of your routine, it’s advisable to abstain from alcohol for at least 24 hours after getting dermal fillers. Alcohol can thin the blood and potentially increase bruising at the injection site.

Blood-thinning medications or supplements

Certain medications and supplements, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and even fish oil, can thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising. Consult with your healthcare provider or contact our office before taking any blood-thinning substances after your treatment.

Excessive heat exposure

Exposure to excessive heat, such as saunas or hot baths, should be avoided for the first few days after your dermal filler treatment as heat can contribute to swelling and may interfere with the settling of the filler.

Overdone makeup

While it’s perfectly fine to use makeup to conceal any redness or bruising, try not to overdo it. Applying too much pressure or using harsh makeup brushes can irritate the treated area.

When it comes to your optimal experience with injectable dermal fillers, post-treatment care and consideration is key. By avoiding the activities mentioned above, you’ll contribute to a smoother recovery process and ensure that you enjoy the full benefits of your dermal filler treatment.
