Tattoo Removal: Is it Safe?

The decision to get a tattoo can be a deeply personal one, often influenced by major life events or milestones. Depending on how those events ultimately turned out, some people end up regretting ever getting a tattoo in the first place. According to WebMd, 30% of Americans have a tattoo and nearly as many — 25% — wish they didn’t

Factors Impacting Effective Tattoo Removal

Some tattoos are easier to remove via laser than others. The age of the tattoo, color, and size and amount of detail are all important factors when it comes to predicting how effective your tattoo removal might be.

Tattoos that were professionally done are also easier to remove than anything done by the possibly shaky hand or uneven application of an amateur.

Color-wise, black and red are the easiest to remove because they absorb all laser wavelengths compared to other laser-specific shades.

The Tattoo Removal Process

After your consultation with Dr. Zelinger, he will use a high-intensity laser that breaks up the pigment in the tattoo, which then gets absorbed by your immune system over the course of a few weeks, resulting in fading.

In light of the factors listed above, it’s not possible to guarantee a total erasure, most tattoos do fade enough that they are no longer noticeable.

While not completely painless, most patients do not require anesthesia and Dr. Zelinger makes every effort to ensure his patients comfort during the procedure. Once the procedure is complete, the area will be treated with antibacterial ointment and covered with a nonstick bandage.
