Debunking 4 of Our “Favorite” Aesthetic Myths

Despite the persistent popularity of aesthetic treatments, from Botox® to dermal fillers or laser rejuvenation, many people are mired in myths about what these procedures truly entail and the results they’re capable of delivering.

So, before you put stock in what you’ve heard online, from friends, or (please no!) social media, our dedicated team would like to clear up four of the most common myths with facts backed by research and our own extensive experience.

Myth #1: Aesthetic Treatments are Exclusively for Women

Ridiculous! Aesthetic care doesn’t discriminate and is in no way gender-specific. Although women have historically led in cosmetic procedures, data show a growing number of men also seek non-surgical and surgical enhancements, including injectables and body contouring treatments, to refresh their appearance and boost confidence.

In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons are referring to this increase in male cosmetic injectables as “brotox,” and, frankly, we’re here for it.

Dr. Zelinger is the best dermatologist I have encountered, having tried many others in and around Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Miami, he is my favorite. His hands-on approach in performing Botox and other treatments is particularly significant to me. Dr. Zelinger is not only skilled but also possesses a charming and approachable demeanor, which immediately puts me at ease. Being a male with strong facial muscles, was pleasantly surprised by the remarkable results of his Botox procedure. I now feel incredibly refreshed and rejuvenated. If you are a man in need of a touch up, I recommend him 100%.” — Zero T.G.

Myth #2: Botox and Fillers Produce Frozen or Fake Results

The idea that injectables inevitably result in stiff expressions or unnatural looks comes from past practices and exaggerated media portrayals. Modern techniques focus on precision and balance, softening lines and restoring volume while preserving natural facial expression.

As former ASPS President Alan Matarasso, MD, FACS, explains, experience and proper dosing matter more than the treatment itself: “Facial surgery or breast surgery often becomes unnatural-looking due to over-enhancement, like overly large breasts or radical facial changes in later ages. The secret to natural-looking results lies in early intervention and appropriate techniques.

Myth #3: Aesthetic Treatments Provide Permanent Results

Not true — and this is not a bad thing! Aesthetic treatments are not designed to support permanent results. Keeping Dr. Matarasso’s explanation in mind, most non-surgical treatments are purposefully temporary to allow for personalized maintenance, which supports those natural looking results.

The temporary nature of neuromodulators like Botox generally last about three to four months, and dermal fillers vary depending on the product and area treated, often up to a year or longer.

Myth #4: Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery Procedures Are the Same Thing

These terms are often used interchangeably, but really shouldn’t. There is a difference and it breaks down like this:

  • Plastic surgery is a broad field that includes both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.
  • Cosmetic surgery focuses specifically on enhancing appearance.*

Understanding the difference between the two matters because it helps set realistic expectations, whether you’re considering surgical or non-surgical aesthetic options.
